Norah Speaks "Buh-ci"

A long day's work
This photo seems like it should follow a long day's work. However, this was taken at about 9:15 am, after Norah had been awake for about 45 minutes! Chiara put her in our bed while she took a shower, and within minutes, Norah had turned to her stomach and was fast asleep! It must be hard work being a baby.
Swimming 4
Norah took a while to relax when we put her on her back, but once she got used to it, she was fine. This picture is taken before she was fully relaxed.
Swimming 1
Norah and Chiara went swimming at Mercer Park. Norah loves the water. She also loves watching the other kids swim.

Want some mashed bananas?
Norah loves to smear her food on her face while eating (really, if you think about it, wouldn't we all love to have some fun while eating?).
She then proceeds to rub her eyes, ears, scratch an itch behind her head, etc. Sometimes, it is just easier to give her a bath afterwards.
Norah now eats: Peas, Carrots, Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans, Nectarines, Peaches, Pears, Apples, Bananas, Baby Cereal, and just last week added Cheerios to her list!
Bri and Norah playing
Brianna's favorite game is "Take Norah's pappy (pacifiler) out of her mouth, and then put it back in...over and over again"
Norah tired of this game quickly, but this photo was taken before she had had enough!
Norah loves to be around other kids, so this was a great time for her. Brianna had fun showing Norah all her toys.
Norah's friend Brianna
Chiara meets Ethan
Welcome to Ethan James!
Norah's cousin (and our nephew) Ethan James was born on January 11, 2008. Here he is with Jim about 1/2 hour after being born.
Two Norahs?
Norah loves mirrors. I caught her in the act of playing in the mirror. Usually when she sees the camera, she stops whatever cute thing she is doing and just sits there. But not this time! Gotcha!
Mohawk Baby
Norah loves bath time (what baby doesn't?). She splashes so much, I often need to change clothes afterwards!
Here she is with a mohawk--daddy's doing!
Norah in the Snow
Norah's Uncle Nicholas and I thought it would be a good idea to get some pictures of her in the snow...for posterity's sake. This way she will have some record of her first time in the snow. So, here it is....
Interpreter Needed
Norah has so much to say. Unfortunately, she only says it in Ba-ese and Da-ian. How she picked those two languages up in an English-speaking family is beyond me. Perhaps she sneaks downstairs at night and watches it on TV. At any rate, we have NO idea what she is saying, so we can only guess.
Ba-ese is definitely the language of choice in the morning. When Norah wakes up, we are greeted with what I guess is “Good Morning” in her language: a smile and a hearty “ba.” Then we look at ourselves in the mirror in her room, and she says, “ba ba ba,” which must mean, “Boy, do you look sleepy or what, Mommy?”
When she reads to herself, she says, “Da da da da-da da da” as she turns the pages. It is as if she is telling the story to herself in Da-ian! Show-off! Why can't she use English like the rest of us?
The other day, I watched as she struggled to reach her pacifier. When she finally got a hold of it, she let out a very relieved “da” and promptly stuck it in her mouth. I could tell that one meant, “Ah, finally!” They must not have a word in Ba-ese that emotes the kind of joy/relief that she wanted to express.
When I point to my mouth or nose, she says “da” or “ba” to let me know she knows what I am pointing at. Maybe it’s in the inflection where one can find meaning in her languages, as is the case in Chinese...
When I am calling for James to come downstairs, she looks at the staircase expectantly and says: “dada”. Could this be Norah’s first word in our language? Or is she just saying, “Hurry up, Mommy’s calling you!” It would be easier to tell if she didn’t say “da” for so many other things!
If you are fluent in Ba-ese or Da-ian, please contact us immediately. We cannot wait to see what our Norah is really saying!
Just one photo
We only have one photo with Norah and *both* her grandparents. We will get more when we go back to Reno for Peter and Liz's wedding in March.
Grandpa and his Motorcycle Goggles
Grandpa spent almost all his "money" at the family auction to procure these fabulous Russian motorcycle goggles. Now, all he needs is a Russian motorcycle to go with them!
Audrey Hepburn....I mean, Norah
Grandma gave Norah this adorable poncho. I like this picture because it is one of the few where you can see her two teeth!
Here is how you do it....
Norah learns the fine art of present-opening from Daddy. Doesn't she seem like she is really concentrating?
Hey...this Tummy Time's not so bad after all....
Norah is starting to become more tolerant of Tummy Time. She used to start crying whenever she was on her belly, but now she can handle it for a little while.
Norah meets Ahpah
Norah met James' grandma, Ahpah for the first time. It was a nice visit. Here, I am not sure if Norah is smiling or just squinting to protect her eyes from the flash!
Save Early, Save Often
Norah is learning to save money at a very young age. Unfortunately, she usually tries to EAT her money. We tried telling her that it is better stored in a bank. Thanks to Aunt Kari and Uncle Bill for this fun piggy bank!
All Bundled Up
Norah Bear in her bear suit, and daddy in his...well....coat. All bundled up and ready for Christmas Eve service.

Norah by the Fire
Norah spent a lot of time in Reno hanging out here by the fire and playing with her toys. It was quite cozy!
Norah and Her Ugly Doll
Norah really likes her "Ugly Doll" from Uncle Adam and Aunt Cassie. Speaking of them, at this time, they were the only ones in the family who hadn't met Norah in person. That would soon be remedied by a visit to Reno for Christmas.
Leg Stretches
We've had to retire this chair, as Norah is getting too big for it. Right before we put it away, she was doing these leg extensions on it.
Icestorm in Early December
An ice storm covered Iowa in early December. We lost some limbs from a pine tree in the back. Still, it was quite beautiful to see the trees coated with a 1/2 inch of ice.
